Phil Hogan has been confirmed as the next European Commissioner for Trade.

His nomination was approved by the European Parliament’s trade committee on Tuesday evening.

In a statement, the Commissioner said he is “honoured to be approved” for the trade portfolio by European Parliament trade coordinators.

I hope to justify the trust they have placed in me

“The EU’s leadership role in global trade has never been more important or faced as many challenges as it does today.

“I therefore look forward to working very closely with [EU Trade] MEPs and the European Council. I hope to justify the trust they have placed in me to deliver on our shared agenda,” he said.

Commissioner Hogan had a three-hour grilling from MEPs on Monday night on his plans for the portfolio

The World Trade Organisation (WTO), child labour and Mercosur were some of the issues he was asked to address.
