The CSO Farm Structure Results for 2013 detailed how 6,300 farms engaged in forestry. Three years later, the 2016 CSO results, revealed this week, show an increase with nearly 2,000 more farms now classified as part forestry. With 137,500 farms in Ireland, this means that nearly 6% of Irish farms are involved in forestry. In regards to non-agricultural income, forestry is the principal activity.

The majority (60%) of farms involved in forestry are located in the south and the east of the country. This type of engagement is regarded as gainful non-agricultural activity, more examples of such would be agricultural contracting (5,000 farms) and farm tourism (1,200 farms).
