DEAR SIR:

I attended the National Ploughing Championships and as always I enjoyed going into the various stands and seeing how agriculture has progressed. After all the dry weather, the Ploughing was unlucky to have experienced the storm and rain but it was good to see the crowds still able to attend. Looking around, it was great opportunity to see the various breeds of cattle and the range of machinery on display. Judging by the beef animals, the beef industry has got the right genetics for beef production. It is a pity that a good beef price cannot be guaranteed. Likewise, all the agribusinesses were in attendance plus there was shopping, food area, entertainment for people that wanted do some shopping. Also, it was good to see the national broadcaster in attendance – farming got an opportunity to be in the spotlight. I noticed a large Co Kilkenny-based milk co-op was in attendance – it is a pity the other leading milk co-ops in Ireland would not attend. As a country that is trying to lead in sustainable dairy production, all the milk co-ops should be able to display their products and what they do and what their position is on how Brexit might affect the dairy industry for the next generation. Well done to the Ploughing organisers in what was a weather challenging week. I’m already looking forward to next year’s national Ploughing Championships.
