Still less than a year old, St Nicholas’ Men’s Shed in Co Clare was co-established with the local GAA club when the Parteen GAA health and wellness committee decided to fight back against the ever-increasing mental health difficulties in the area.

Speaking on behalf of the organisation, Leo Van Dam explains that the group is an outlet for men who may otherwise find it difficult to cope with and express negative feelings. Loneliness, physical ailment and grief are some of the difficulties members of this men’s shed face. Inclusion of all ages, abilities, interests and employment status is what makes Parteen Men’s Shed special.

From sanding and varnishing wood pieces, to restoring flower boxes, furniture and machinery, playing cards, darts and hosting ceilis, the group’s focus is on healthy physical and mental activity.

“Recently we restored a bird house for someone who placed great sentimental value on it. We gladly do it for free, it’s about giving back something for nothing,” says Leo.

While the club is a time-out for many, it also promotes positive mental health through exercise. Nightly 5km walks throughout the summer months help members to stay active, in both mind and body, as well as special sporting events, such as the recent 50km charity cycle. Educating people on the benefits of physical exercise on their mental state is key, says Leo, which is why discussions led by professional medical staff are so successful.

“On 6 September the group launches a new mental and physical health programme. This upcoming event is open to old and new members and St Nicholas’ Men’s Shed would love to have you there,” says Leo.

The members meet every Monday and Thursday, from 10am to 12pm, and Tuesday and Thursday, from 7pm to 9pm, on the grounds of St Nicholas’ GAA club. The group is always open to new members and would happily welcome anybody along to meetings. Anyone interested in joining St Nicholas’ Men’s Shed can contact Leo on 089-7036077.
