Milk powder exports helped drive EU agri-food exports to a new record level of €11.2bn for January 2019.

The latest trade data from the European Commission shows that by sector, the highest export growth was achieved in spirits and liqueurs (up €81m), wine (up €68m) and milk powders (up €58m) year-on-year.

In total in January, the EU exported €389m worth of milk powders.

The USA increased the amount of EU agri-food products it imported in January 2019 compared to the same month in 2018 by €191m, while China also imported more agri-food products, with an increase of €91m.

In contrast, agri-food exports fell most to Hong Kong (down €4m), Turkey (down €2m), Angola (down €26m) and Saudi Arabia (down €2m).

Meanwhile, agri-food imports also grew to a record of €10.8bn, leading to the monthly trade value topping €22bn, compared to €21bn in January 2018.

The value of EU agri food imports increased most for products coming from the USA (up €291m) and Ukraine (up €246m).

Imports which decreased most were from Brazil (down €145m), Indonesia (down €97m) and Malaysia (down €68m).

Looking at products, import values decreased significantly in particular for palm oil (down 15%) and coffee (down 12%).

The highest increases in import values over the last 12 months were recorded for coarse grains (up €976m, an increase of 31%), followed by fruit (excluding citrus and tropical) (up €546m, an increase of 9%) and soybeans (up €288m, a jump of 6%).
