As August comes to an end, our survey results from milk processors this week show for the first time this year that milk supplies are tapering back relative to the early months of the year through peak supply.

Glanbia reports that last week’s supplies were behind the same week last year for the first time since spring.

Overall, they were up 12% for July and Glanbia estimates that August supplies will be up 3% compared with the same period last year. The other big player in the south, Dairygold, was up 7.1% for July and estimates that August this year will be on par with August 2018.

Last year, the CSO calculated August supply at 814m litres, so the suggestion from the survey is that there will be a single-digit increase on this volume rather than another double-digit increase as per previous months already reported.

Lakeland reports that August milk supply is up 5%. Arrabawn is up close to 7%. Most of the west Cork co-ops report August supply on par or slightly back on August 2018.

Drinagh estimates it will be back 2%, Lisavaird back 1%, and Bandon up 2%. Kerry reports that August supplies are up 1.3% while Aurivo reports August milk supply is up by an estimated 5.5%.
