The first major task ahead of Newford Farm in 2019 is the recruitment of a farm manager. Current manager Matthew Murphy has been running the herd in recent years but a change is now on the cards, with Matthew taking up another role in Dawn Meats.

The position includes carrying out all the day-to-day tasks for the 100-cow suckler herd where all progeny are brought through to beef. There are a number of important tasks, with calving the herd being the first of these in 2019. The herd has recorded impressive breeding performance in recent years and is set to see in the region of 80% of cows and heifers calve in the first six weeks.

Along with calving, the farm manager will be responsible for implementing a breeding programme utilising 100% AI, grassland management and animal health. The position is an exciting opportunity that will also explore adoption of the latest technical efficiencies while the farm manager will also be involved in supporting discussion groups and open days.

The farm manager will have the support of a management and stakeholder team. This comprises members from Dawn Meats and Teagasc, who established the herd, and the Irish Farmers Journal, while McDonald's also provides support. The project, which began in 2015, is four years into its seven-year term.

The successful candidate will be employed by Dawn Meats and interested parties can apply online or in writing to HR Department, Dawn Meats, Grannagh, Co Waterford. Relevant experience is essential, with the position requiring at least a Green Cert or equivalent. The closing date for applications is 14 January 2019.
