Agri-researchers from academia and companies in Ireland have been awarded a total of €6.32 million in the most recent round of EU funding from the Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme.

The EU has declared that the funding will soon become available for programmes in agriculture, food, rural economy and marine and inland waters, as part of the programme.

The main objective behind Horizon 2020 is to promote Europe as leaders in the fields of scientific breakthroughs and strengthening innovation, in order to develop new projects.

The programme is the EU’s largest research and innovation programme, and will see almost €80m in funding provided to researchers and innovators between 2014 and 2020.

Welcoming the funding

Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine Michael Creed has welcomed the announcement of funding and congratulated all Irish participants in the project.

Ireland is continuing to outperform targets set in this part of Horizon 2020. Overall, we are competing successfully with the best researchers and most innovative companies in the EU for funding.

Minister Creed’s Research and Codex Division at the department has been working with Enterprise Ireland and other organisations to identify suitable Irish projects and support those involved.
