British retailer Sainsbury’s has reported a 2.8% fall in like-for-like food sales for the second quarter of 2014, the third consecutive quarterly sales fall. Like-for-like sales (excluding fuel) for the six months to the end of September were back 2.1%. Sainsbury’s operates 594 supermarkets and 660 convenience stores throughout Britain.

The three major retailers in Britain – Tesco, Morrison’s and Sainsbury’s – continue to struggle with falling sales as consumers move away from big weekly shops in favour of the ‘little and often’ approach in smaller outlets.
