Roscommon Mart is the latest mart to implement a “mart staff only” policy in its sale yard.

The new rule comes in the wake of a serious accident and the temporary closure of four marts in the west by Aurivo, pending a safety review.

Roscommon Mart is one of a number of marts to quickly move to lock down access to the lairage area.

It said it was operating a new health and safety procedures for all its sales from Friday, 13 April, onwards.

“In light of recent issues regarding health and safety, for the safety of our customers and staff members we are adopting the stance that only mart staff will be allowed into our sales yard,” the mart spokesman said.

“We are aware that these changes will inconvenience and cause concern for both buyers and sellers,” the spokesman added. “If you have any problems or issues with these changes, please contact the manager or yard foreman.”

Animals that have been bought or go through the ring unsold can only be taken out of their holding pens by mart staff.
