It proved to be another good week for Scottish beef farmers, as many abattoirs put another 10p/kg on their base prices for R grade carcases.

Some processors started the week hoping to keep the price at £3.75/kg, but had to raise their price to match the competition.

The official AHDB price increased by 7p to £3.74/kg for an R4L steer in Scotland for the week ending 10 June.

ADHB also report that R4L grading heifers also rose by 9p to £3.75/kg with same-grade young bulls also up by 13p to £3.68/kg.

Cows grading O-4L jumped by another 10p to £2.74/kg.

Store cattle

The number of store cattle sold through the live ring was 1,275 which is down 818 head on the week. The national average was £803/head, down £91 on the previous week.

Over 5,896 new season lambs were sold through the prime ring a rise of 1,370 in Scotland with an average price of £2.37/kg recorded, down 4p/kg on the week.

Meanwhile, abattoirs are paying around £4.90/kg deadweight for R grade new season lambs.

In total, 1,936 hoggets were sold through the prime live ring

The UK AHDB lamb price is sitting at £4.91/kg which is a fall of 35p/kg on the week.

Finished hoggets in the live ring were trading at £1.61/kg for medium-weight lots, which is down 16p/kg on the week.

In total, 1,936 hoggets were sold through the prime live ring, a drop of 1,428 on the previous week.

The live ring also recorded 2,934 ewes sold last week, down by 994 on the previous week. The average price paid rose £1.64/head to £70.64/head.
