Air temperatures were recorded at over 20°C and long days of sunshine have driven grass growth to exceptional highs very quickly.

All of a sudden the milking herd is going into covers of 1,800kg plus as warm temperatures and sunshine on top of well-fertilised paddocks drives grass growth over 100kg per day.

Important decisions will be taken on this farm and all farms in the next few days as decisions need to be taken on short-term silage, long-term silage, and grazing for the next seven to 14 days.

The last fat percentage result this week was 4.26% fat and 3.32% protein. Milk yield remains around 19 litres per cow so, milk solids produced is around 1.55kg MS/cow/day. The diet now is a mix of grazed grass and meal.

Important jobs for the coming week will be:

  • Get the breeding charts sorted out and ready for the start of breeding.
  • Ensure all AI sires are ordered and in stock.
  • Get vasectomised bulls into the farm and vaccinated. If vaccinating for IBR ideally all bulls need to be vaccinated at least two months before they are needed.
