Feeding a ration made up of 64% Irish grain and protein can result in the same level of emissions reduction as switching to protected urea, according to Teagasc’s Michael Hennessy.

Hennessy, who is head of crops knowledge transfer, presented research at the Farming for a Better Climate conference on Tuesday showing how emissions from dairy cows on 1.25t of concentrate per cow per year can be reduced by 7.4% when fed a ration made up of 64% Irish grain.

Using protected urea results in a reduction of 6-8% in the carbon footprint of milk production.
