Tuam Co-operative Mart, Co Galway, held a show and sale of Charolais and Simmental weanlings on Monday evening, with 180 heifers and 250 bulls entered. There was a super show of quality suckler stock on view and trade was very positive throughout.
This pair of Charolais bulls born January and April 2020 weighed 312kg and sold €950 (€3.04/kg).
Prices for weanling bulls from 300kg to 330kg were a flying trade, with a typical range of €2.55/kg to €2.70/kg, while top-quality lots surpassed this with ease and made anything from €2.80/kg to €3.05/kg and as high as €3.37/kg for a March-born Charolais weighing 300kg (€1,010).
This March-born Charolais bull weighed 285kg and sold for €860 (€3.36/kg).
Lighter types
Lighter types were also met with exceptional appetite, with €2.70/kg to €2.85/kg being made for nice-quality March- and April-born stock.
This 460kg Charolais bull born January 2020 sold for €1,270 (€2.76/kg).
Heavier or older bulls were that bit easier on the night. This could really be seen for plainer-type bulls, which were making around the €2.10/kg to €2.20/kg mark, while better-quality lots or younger bulls with good weight for age were demanding maybe 10c/kg to 15c/kg more.

Top quality
Heifers from 280kg to 320kg were in high demand, with prices around the €2.50/kg to €2.65/kg mark in the main.
Top-quality lots were making a lot more, with €2.80/kg to €3.00/kg available in select cases. Heifers from 330kg to 380kg were making between €2.35/kg and €2.45/kg on average.
This February-born Charolais bull weighed 365kg and sold for €990 (€2.71/kg).
Mart manager Marion Devane said she was delighted with trade and that prices reflected the excellent quality of stock on show.
