Last Thursday’s sale at Gort Mart saw the autumn-born weanling show and sale take place. Mart manager Bernie Fahy said that there was a packed yard for the sale.

This Charolais-cross bull, born November 2018 and weighing 520kg, sold for €1,030 (€1.98/kg).

In total, there were 540 cattle, which were met with a good trade considering the current livestock market. The majority of demand was farmer-led, but there were a large number of exporters present actively sourcing stock giving rise to a 95% clearance.

This Limousin-cross heifer, born December 2018 and weighing 355kg, sold for €785 (€2.21/kg).

Weanling heifer and lighter bull trade was strong, with prices similar to last year. While there was good demand for heavy bulls, the prices were back €80 to €140 per head, due mainly to poorer factory prices on offer at present.

This Charolais-cross heifer, born September 2018 and weighing 410kg, sold for €865 (€2.11/kg).

Top-quality heavy bulls sold to €1,350 for a 440kg Belgian Blue, with the majority of bulls over 400kg selling from €1,000 to €1,150. Top-quality bulls from 300kg to 400kg sold mainly from €900 to €980 and prices averaged at €2.38/kg, with the top third averaging €2.65/kg.

This Charolais-cross heifer, born November 2018 and weighing 395kg, sold for €1,000 (€2.53/kg).

Light bulls from 200kg to 300kg sold mainly from €2.60/kg to €2.90/kg. Heifers from 300kg to 400kg sold for €2.20/kg to €2.35/kg on average, with better-quality types selling to over €2.50/kg. Lighter heifers from 200kg to 300kg sold mainly from €2.30/kg to €2.50/kg, with the top third selling for €2.70/kg on average. Commission rates are €10 to the buyer and 1.5% to 1.7% to the seller.

This Limousin-cross bull, born September 2018 and weighing 475kg, sold for €1,100 (€2.32/kg).
