We have received a number of reports of farmers being injured by freshly calved cows. It is a dangerous time with even the quietest cows becoming aggressive in the days leading up to and after calving. Either the calf or the cow should be removed from the pen when carrying out procedures such as naval dipping or tagging. If going to the yard to assist in a calving, always let someone know so they can intervene should you fail to return. Cows that are aggressive should be earmarked for culling. Remember you are the most valuable asset on the farm. Also, Peter Varley, on page 37, has an excellent safety tip for roof skylights.
