Calls were made at an IFA livestock meeting in Letterkenny for the Government to establish a fodder crisis fund to address the severe shortage some farmers in the county are experiencing.

Andrew McShea, local IFA rural development chair, said he had contacted a number of fodder suppliers last week and they quoted €50/bale for 4x4 hay, €35/bale for silage and €4.50/bale to €5/bale for small square bales of hay.

A number of farmers called on the Minister for Agriculture to establish a fodder crisis fund without delay so farmers can source supplies before it is too late and things spiral out of control.

Seamus Quinn, suckler farmer from south Donegal, said second cut was impossible to save on many farms in the south of the county and cows have been housed since July in some cases, meaning first cut silage is coming to an end on these farms.
