Participants in BDGP have until 31 October to fulfil the requirement to have 50% of the reference number of animals in their herd genotyped four- and five-star.

Earlier this month, the Irish Farmers Journal revealed that there were over 1,200 participating herds currently falling short of this target.

Almost 8,000 genotyped four- and five-star animals needed to change hands to avoid penalties.

The fine for not meeting the target is 140%, so not only will a farmer lose out on the 2020 payment, almost half of the 2019 BDGP payment would also be clawed back.

Special sales

To help farmers meet the target, the ICBF has facilitated a number of special BDGP sales around the country.

Farmers wishing to purchase heifers at these sales can login to www.icbf.com on the morning of a sale and view the details of the heifers entered for the sale via the heifer tracker application on the website.

Monday's sales

Carrigallen, Dungarvan, Tuam and Tullamore Marts will all host sales for BDGP-eligible females on Monday 21 September. All heifers meet the BDGP eligibility criteria, as well as being sire-verified.

Tuam Mart's sale saw over 70 BDGP-eligible females entered.

Tullamore Mart's sale had similar numbers entered.

Dungarvan Mart had over 10 eligible females entered.

Carrigallen Mart's sale starts at 7pm, with over 40 BDGP-eligible females entered so far.

If purchased, any of these heifers will contribute towards BDGP targets. Heifers must be in your herd on Saturday 31 October to be counted for the scheme target.

Roscrea Mart: special sale of over 100 heifers

Last Friday, Central Auctions, Roscrea, held a special sale of BDGP heifers. Auctioneer Micheal Harty said that they had received a lot of enquiries before the sale and that the sale went very well.

“We have a number of agents looking for suitable heifers for farmer clients and we also had a lot of farmers here on Friday, a few of which were stuck for heifers,” he said.

Top call of the sale went to a February 2019-born Belgian Blue heifer. She weighed 570kg and sold for €1,400 (€2.46/kg).

The general run of bulling heifers in the 400kg to 500kg bracket was €2.10/kg to €2.30/kg.

“Weanlings are a good trade and that means farmers have a bit of confidence again buying replacement heifers and that’s great to see,” Michael said.
