Food in Ireland is the fourth most expensive in the European Union, a new report by Eurostat has found.

The only other countries more expensive than Ireland are Denmark, Sweden and Austria.

Figures in the report show that Ireland is 119% more expensive than the EU average.

Eurostat – the statistical office of the EU – also found that meat in Ireland in 106% more expensive than the EU average, while dairy products are 128% more expensive.

The data is based on a 2015 price survey covering 440 products across Europe.

Denmark was found to have the most expensive meat, while dairy produce was priced the highest in Cyprus.

The report showed that Poland was the cheapest country for meat and dairy.

Despite the high price of dairy produce, farmgate milk price estimations for Ireland for May were among the lowest in Europe at €23.25/100kg.

The raw milk price fell below the EU average for May which was €26.57/100kg.

Ireland second highest per capita GDP last year

In 2015, Ireland recorded the second highest per capita GDP in the EU, at 145% of the average.

However, Ireland was 95% off the EU average for Actual Individual Consumption (AIC), which measures the material welfare of households.

Luxembourg recorded the second highest per capita GDP at 271% off the EU average, while Bulgaria had the lowest at 46%.
