Letter to the Editor

Hi Janine,

We’re just writing a quick note to let you know about our wonderful stay at Dunbrody House.

The staff were truly excellent and they made us feel very welcome. We dined at the hotel on both nights and each night we enjoyed ourselves thoroughly. The food was simply outstanding.

We were also very lucky with the weather which made the stay all the more enjoyable.

Once again we’d like to thank everyone at the Irish Farmers Journal for such a lovely prize.

Kind regards,

Teresa and Peter Keaveney

Home management with Katherine O’Leary

Every day, most families put three meals on the table. Oftentimes, breakfasts and lunches are taken on the run or made by the individual members themselves. Families should try to have at least one meal per day together. It provides good nutrition and also gives a family quality time to chat about the day’s happenings. It is a good opportunity for children and teenagers to share their stories of the day. It is important that the food is nutritious and tasty. Crucial to this delivery of the dinner every day is planning. Ideally, a plan should be made for a week at a time. Try to plan the meals before the weekly grocery shop is done. Choose a variety of foods. Avoid serving the same food on the same day every week. Choose foods that are in season. Serve a protein at each meal and aim to cover half the plate with vegetables or salad.

From Dr Philippe Roy:

We have found that only farm women show up to a (health) talk. We need to reach men. ‘Make it fun and men will come’ has been one of our findings. We need to identify gatekeepers, identify distress in communities and link in with farmer wellness workers. It is a growing movement in Canada now
