Cattle slurry has been identified as the pollutant released into the river, a spokesperson for the Loughs Agency told the Irish Farmers Journal, adding that the spill represented a "major pollution incident".
Loughs Agency staff have located the source and taken samples. The discharge has now stopped and they have used aeration equipment to re-oxygenate the water. However, "the agency has unfortunately found evidence that the pollution has impacted the fish stocks and has advised that dead fish may be washed downstream," the spokesperson said.
The Northern Ireland Environment Agency is also investigating the case.
