Mairead McGuinness will bring a strong and credible voice on agriculture to Brexit discussions at the Commission table, the IFA has said.

IFA president Tim Cullinan welcomed her selection for the role of Irish Commissioner. If approved by the European Parliament she will take the financial services and stability portfolio.

“The current turmoil around the Brexit negotiations is proof, if it were needed, of the vital strategic importance of having an Irish nominee at the Commission table,” Cullinan said.

He added that McGuinness’s knowledge of Irish agriculture would be crucial in defending Ireland’s position as the talks headed towards a conclusion.

The strong network she has developed across the EU institutions would also be helpful in building alliances to secure outcomes that work for Ireland, he said.

Cullinan said he looked forward to working with Colm Markey, a Louth county councillor and dairy farmer who will take the place of McGuinness in the Parliament.

Irish interests

ICSA president Edmond Phelan also congratulated McGuinness on her appointment.

Phelan said: “Mairead McGuinness has been a very capable representative of Irish interests at EU level for many years, especially in relation to CAP and Brexit. I have no doubt that she will continue to do her utmost to keep Ireland’s perspective on Brexit centre stage at the EU Commission.”

“ICSA looks forward to continuing to work closely with Commissioner McGuinness over the coming months and years.”
