Declan McKenna, Clogher, took the Allams fatstock show championship with a black Limousin heifer.

The reserve champion was a red Limousin heifer shown by Alan Farlow from Garvagh.

In the sale, McKenna’s champion made £6,000 for 580kg, with the Farlow reserve making £4,000 for 600kg.

The champion was purchased by Jonathan McDowell and family, for their farm butchery at Farmview Meats in Castlereagh. The reserve sold to Country Meats in Aghagallon.

The McDowell family also paid £4,800 for the housewife’s champion, a 690kg Belgian Blue heifer shown by Keith Williamson from Benburb. Country Meats bought the reserve housewife’s champion for £2,800, a 660kg Limousin heifer shown by Crawford and Beattie, Newtownstewart.

The Shorthorn champion from Martin Johnston, Toome, a heifer weighing 580kg and selling for £2,450 to Hannan Meats, is destined for Fortnum and Mason’s store in London.

Best of the other champions was the Blonde heifer from Eugene Maguire, Sixmilecross, who got £2,200 for 600kg.

The main range of prices went from 240p to 300p/kg liveweight and, in a brisk sale, prices were 10p to 20p/kg higher than last year. Among the top prices secured by auctioneer Roy Gibson was 380p/kg for a 650kg Charolais heifer from Nigel Cochrane, Portadown, and 375p for a 690kg Limousin heifer from Corrie and Neill, Newtownards.
