Kilkenny Macra are holding a farm safety talk in the Springhill Court Hotel on Wednesday 15 July 2015 at 7.30pm. Speakers on the night include Macra National President Sean Finan, Brian Rohan from EMBRACE farm and John McNamara, Health and Safety Officer with Teagasc.

Members of other Macra county clubs and members of the IFA are also expected to attend.

Julie Ni Mhaoldomhnaigh of Callan Macra in Co Kilkenny is one of the event organisers and she is hopeful there will be a good turnout. "The event has been promoted and advertised across the country but we expect a lot of Macra members will be coming from Kilkenny and Carlow," she said.

The full-time nurse said she is delighted to have Rohan and McNamara speak at the event as both bring something very different to the night.

"Brian Rohan will be focusing on the kind of the support there is for families after a tragedy on the farm and John will be looking at how to avoid accidents. Both aspects are very important."

Julie also stressed the importance of keeping farm safety in the minds of young farmers, saying how important it is to create awareness around the issue.

"Farm deaths don't only cast a shadow over the place of work, they also take place on peoples' homes. The mental health implications of that have to be taken into account."

Deaths on Irish farms claimed the lives of 30 people in 2014 and five people have died on Irish farms so far in 2015.
