Between now and 2030, worldwide demand growth for milk and milk products will be three times the level of current US milk production a conference in Moorepark heard on Monday. The 19th International Farm Comparison Network (IFCN) conference took place in Teagasc Moorepark, Co Cork. It held discussions on the main findings from the latest publication by the IFCN.

Milk production

There are currently 876 million tonnes of milk produced worldwide. The increases in demand come as a result of a growing population and increasing prosperity worldwide. On a global level, farms are going to become more intensive, with the IFCN forecasting a 50% increase in milk production per farm. IFCN managing director Dr Torsten Hemme explained that change in the dynamic of dairy farms globally will ensure the growing demand for milk supply is met.

Technology

Biotechnology is expected to have a big impact on milk production in the future. Robert Walker from Alltech explained that data gathered from modern technology will help the efficiency and resourcefulness of farms when increasing production.

In 2017, we witnessed a 4% increase in milk production globally. However, 2018 shows a different picture. Production levels are curtailed as a result of weather in New Zealand, the EU and Argentina. The US encountered economic challenges which saw production reduce there.
