With large numbers ready to be killed, combined with the disruption of factory kills in recent weeks, this has had a large impact on prices in the past week.

Low kills in recent weeks have resulted in a decrease in demand at the ringside and poorer prices.

Having said that, while some forward store lamb prices have eased, those under 35kg are still holding their own.

Heavy butchers’ lambs over 50kg have seen prices ease in line with factory prices.

Prices paid at mart sales are ranging mainly from €94 to €99/head, which is down slightly on last week.

The high prices over €100/head reported in recent weeks are now few and far between.

Factory lambs from 45kg to 50kg are selling mainly from €90 to €94, with some prices of over €95/head being recorded, but less than last week.

Average prices are back by about €2 to €3/head and up to €4/head at some sales.

Lambs from 42kg to 44kg are ranging mainly from €86 to €89/head, which is similar to last week, but under-fleshed types are a little easier.

Store lamb prices are steady, with some heavier types easing by €1 to €2/head.

The average 40kg store is selling mainly from €79 to €82/head, with few making over €83/head this week.

Lighter store lambs from 35kg to 37kg are a stronger trade and are selling mainly from €73 to €78/head, depending on quality. Lighter types from 30kg to 35kg are selling mainly from €67/head to €71/head.

The trade for breeding hoggets is strong, with prices of better-quality types ranging from €150 to €180/head and to close on €200/head for choice lots at some sales.
