Teagasc has appointed Ger Shortle regional advisory manager in the Wicklow/Carlow/Wexford region. Shortle will now be responsible for leading the delivery of Teagasc advisory services to farmers and educational courses in the region.

The vacancy arose following the retirement of John Moloney. Dr Siobhan Walsh, who had been managing the region in the interim will move to managing the Kilkenny/Waterford region.

Background

Shortle is from a farming background and qualified with a degree in agriculture from UCD, later completing a higher diploma in rural environmental management. He also completed a postgraduate certificate in leadership development.

He began his career in Teagasc as an advisor in Longford. He then become principal of Mellows Agricultural College in Athenry and later transferred to the research directorate in Johnstown Castle. He managed the agricultural catchments programme which focused on the impact and implantation of Ireland’s Nitrates Action Programme (NAP).

He also worked on the establishment of the Kildalton open source sustainable demonstration farm and completed a year’s secondment from Teagasc in Brussels. Here, he worked as a policy officer in the water unit of DG Environment in the European Commission.

Management

Speaking following his appointment Shortle said: “I am delighted to take up the management role in the Wicklow/Carlow/Wexford Region and look forward to working closely with the farming community and the agri-food sector in the region.

We have a strong team of advisors who are working hard to support economically, socially and environmentally sustainable family farms in the three counties.

We are also supporting the development of current and future farmers through the delivery of education and training courses designed to provide them with the skills and knowledge to equip them for a successful and fulfilling future in farming.”
