Three new varieties have been added to the winter oilseed rape recommended list for planting this autumn. There are now seven varieties recommended. Four continue from last year – Anastasia, DK Extrovert, PX113 and SY Harnas – and three new ones are provisionally recommended, Alizze, Aquila and Dariot.

As in recent years, the recommended list is published before the 2019 crops are harvested, so it does not include 2019 variety performance. This is because of the great difficulty in getting 2019 plots harvested and processed without causing excessive delay to the publication of the new list.

Details of the seven recommended varieties are shown in Table 1. This information is based on the relative strength of each characteristic in 2016, 2017 and 2018 but not 2019. Most varieties are now hybrid and the new entry Aquila has the highest yield rating combined with high oil content. Its only small weakness appears to be that it is regarded as being somewhat more susceptible to shedding. However, shedding ratings are based on limited data due to the lack of the problem in recent years.

Variety ratings differ slightly to last year’s values but the yield ranking of the four recommended varieties remains the same. A list of the other varieties tested in 2018 is shown in Table 2.

Characteristics of the varieties in Table 1

  • Anastasia – conventional: it is the highest-yielding of the recommended varieties and is conventionally bred. It has good early vigour, which is increasingly important. It is quite tall but it has very good lodging resistance and very stiff stems. It is moderately early to flower and is moderate for maturity. It is very good on shedding and has good light leaf spot resistance. It is bred by Limagrain Verneuil Holding and handled by Seedtech Ltd.
  • DK Extrovert – hybrid: a good variety with higher relative yield than last year. It has good early vigour. It has only moderate lodging resistance and moderately stiff stems and will often benefit from growth regulation. It is very early to flower but is only moderately early on maturity. It has very good light leaf spot and good shedding resistance. This DK variety was bred by Monsanto LLC and is handled by Goldcrop Ltd.
  • PX113 –hybrid semi-dwarf: this is a semi-dwarf variety with very short straw. It has lower seed yield but with very good lodging resistance and stem stiffness. Early vigour is less good than the others. It is moderately late flowering but moderately early maturing. It has very good shedding resistance with moderate light leaf spot resistance. It was bred by DuPont/Pioneer, who handle the variety here.
  • SY Harnas – hybrid: a high-yielding hybrid with good early vigour. It has only moderate lodging resistance and moderately stiff stems and therefore needs effective growth regulation. It is moderately early to flower and has a moderate maturity rating. It has good shedding resistance and moderate light leaf spot resistance. This SY variety was bred by Syngenta and is handled by Goldcrop Ltd.
  • Alizze – hybrid: new on the list with a provisional recommendation. It has good average yield with above-average oil content and good early vigour. It is on the higher end of glucosinolate content though. It is average height, strong-strawed with very good lodging resistance and good stem stiffness. It is very early flowering with early maturity. It has good light leaf spot resistance and very high shedding resistance. Alizze was bred by RAGT2n and is handled by Goldcrop Ltd.
  • Aquila – hybrid: also new on the list with provisional recommendation. It is a very high-yielding hybrid with good oil content and below-average glucosinolate content. It shows good early vigour, is early to flower and is average for maturity rating. It has good lodging resistance and good stem stiffness. It has good light leaf spot and shedding resistance scores. It was bred by Limagrain and is handled by Seedtech Ltd.
  • Dariot – hybrid: the third of the new provisionally recommended varieties for 2019. It is also very high yielding with good early establishment vigour. It is a tall variety with good lodging resistance and moderately stiff stems, but it may benefit from active growth regulation. It is moderately early flowering and has a moderate maturity rating. It has moderate light leaf spot resistance, but is very resistant to shedding. It was bred by DSV and is handled by Seedtech Ltd.
  • The new winter oilseed rape recommended list contains seven varieties, three of which are new.
  • Alizze, Aquila and Dariot come on to the list with provisional recommendation.
  • These evaluations do not include variety performance from the 2019 harvest.
