Many more catch crops will be grown this year than have been grown before thanks to the Farming for Water programme.
The majority of these crops are now planted, but an odd few being planted under the Agri-Climate Rural Environment Scheme (ACRES) may not be.
The deadlines for planting are as follows:
Farming for Water pre-winter cover crop (measure 6B) – 1 August.Farming for Water over-winter cover crop (measure 6A) – 1 September.ACRES cover crops – 15 September.Planted instead of carrying out crop diversification – 15 September.Dates these crops have to be left in place until:
Farming for Water pre-winter cover crop – 30 September.Farming for Water over-winter cover crop – 1 January.ACRES cover crops – 1 January.Planted instead of carrying out crop diversification – 1 December.Farming for Water declarations
Under the Farming for Water programme, growers must declare the area of catch crops that they planted.
You then need to fill out the declaration form sent to you and return it by 8 September for a short-term catch crop (this deadline was extended from 1 September) and return it by 1 October for an over-winter catch crop.
It is important to remember that if you applied to plant 20ha under the Farming for Water programme and you only planted 15ha, then you are paid for what you planted and you put 15ha on your application form.
Sowing rates
Seeding rates and mixes are the same for each of the schemes. The Farming for Water project follows the ACRES guidelines on this.
You can see these seeding rate requirements here.
You should keep all labels and dockets from the seed and keep Farming for Water and ACRES separately for inspection.
