Spring barley continued to be harvested over the last week, although the area was getting small. While some yields were still holding up around the 3t, others were much lower and down closer to 2t/ac. The run of it was probably 2.4-2.7t/ac.
Quality was also declining with lower KPH levels and higher screenings moving into the double digits.
These crops were still reported to be yielding okay. There was a lot of grain, but those grains didn’t fill possibly due to secondary growth on later-sown crops.
Spring wheat and oats continue to be cut and winter wheat is still on the list on some farms.
Yields have slipped back on winter wheat with reports of just over 4t/ac on average. Winter beans and some early-sown spring beans have been harvested down south at less than 2t/ac with good quality.
Further up the country, some more farmers moved to the fields to cut early-sown spring beans.
The hot weather this week is likely to bring in spring bean crops earlier than usual.
That good weather, which is due to last into next week, should see the cereal harvest wrapped up on most farms with good conditions for harvesting and baling.
The harvest is one of the earliest, finishing up when the spring barley and winter wheat harvests are often only starting or before it.
