Your CV tells employers who you are in terms of skills, work experience and education and is your first opportunity to sell yourself.

So it makes sense to take the time to prepare a winning CV that will give the best first impression.

Remember that your CV is one of potentially hundreds that an employer receives in an average year – yours must stand out and be easily readable in the first 10 seconds.

My three top tips

Presentation is everything

  • Make sure that your CV is well presented, clearly structured and easy to follow.
  • Divide it into headings including key skills, work history, education, training and interests.
  • Use bullet points and short sentences.
  • Check spelling, grammar and formatting.
  • Keep it to two to three pages maximum.
  • Mind your language

  • Use professional, but not overly-formal language.
  • Avoid jargon and acronyms – you may know what they mean but others may not.
  • Write the CV yourself and ask someone else to proofread it and give you feedback.
  • Your CV should be your own work, written in your own style, as it reflects who you are professionally.
  • Writing your CV yourself also helps you prepare for an interview when you’ll need to talk about what’s on it.
  • Tailor your CV to match the role that you are applying for

  • Employers want to see at a glance how your skills and experience match job requirements.
  • Look at the job advertisement or job description to see what is needed.
  • Highlight and prioritise on your CV any relevant skills and experience that you have.
  • By getting your CV right, you are paving the way to being short-listed for a job interview and hopefully landing the job you’re looking for, so take the time to make it the best it can be.
