The Nebraska Army and Air National Guard has been assisting farmers and cattle affected by flooding. Fodder was airlifted to cattle that had been driven to higher ground where possible.

Nebraska Army National Guard soldiers used a CH-47 Chinook helicopter with Company B, 2-135th General Support Aviation Battalion, to secure multiple bales of hay on 20 March 20 and airdrop them to cattle.

The flooding has been described as a ‘historic’ event. It was caused by a severe winter storm and straight-line winds which started on 9 March.

US President Donald Trump said on Thursday that a "major disaster" exists in the State of Nebraska and ordered federal aid to supplement State, tribal and local recovery efforts in the areas affected.

His declaration made government funding available to affected individuals in the counties of Butler, Cass, Colfax, Dodge, Douglas, Nemaha, Sarpy, Saunders and Washington.

“Recent flooding in the Midwest and along the Missouri and Mississippi River Valleys has caused devastating impacts across the region,” United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Secretary Sonny Perdue said.

“While farmers and ranchers in the area are resilient, the pain is real. We will do everything in our power at USDA to be as helpful as we possibly can.”
