Boortmalt has strongly refuted claims by the IFA that it has imported non-Irish barley or malt into Waterford.

Speaking to the Irish Farmers Journal, the maltster said: “Boortmalt is currently commissioning new and rebuilt plants in Athy, but as part of the continuous supply agreements with our Irish customers, we exported some Irish barley for malting in Antwerp.

Imports

“We are now importing the malt produced from Irish barley for our customers through Waterford,” it said.

Last summer, an accident at its Athy facility significantly reduced its malting capacity at the site.

IFA grain committee members remain at the port in Waterford and are preventing the last of the ship's contents from being unloaded.

On hearing of Boortmalt’s claim that the shipload is malt derived from Irish grain, IFA grain chair Mark Browne said that the IFA must see evidence that the grain is Irish.
