Farmers should consult their vet before removing brisket or dewlap tags in order to avoid welfare issues, says the Scottish Government.

Previously the Animal and Plant Health Association (APHA) had stated that farmers should not remove brisket tags, despite the fact it is now illegal to use them. They argued that removal can cause pain and stress to the animal.

A Scottish Government spokesperson said: “If keepers wish to remove these tags to avoid possible future welfare problems, they can do so after taking advice from their private vet.”
