In the first six months of 2020, the 27 European Union countries' butter exports surged by 59% compared to 2019.

These included all main destination markets, such as the US, which increased by 31% and Saudi Arabia, increasing by 168%.

The UK destination has been excluded from the figures. China became the fourth-largest destination market, increasing by 65%.

Exporters

Ireland, France, Netherlands, Denmark and Belgium were the top five EU butter exporters in January to June 2020, having a 78% share in total exports, at 110,929t.

The UK, US, Egypt and Morocco were the top four destinations for Irish butter. Ireland exported 47,649t in the first half of 2020, including 16,159t to the UK, 15,869t to the US and 3,754t to Egypt.

Saudi Arabia was the top destination for Lithuanian (3,100t) and Danish (2,982t) butter. China was the top destination for French (2,982t), Belgian (1,285t) and Dutch (1,263t) butter.

From January to May 2020, EU butter exports to the UK decreased by 11%.
