Padraig Donohoe

Curracloe, Wexford

Around 20mm of rain fell in Curracloe two weeks ago, which relieved any pressure for moisture on Padraig’s farm. With that said, the rain that is due to arrive this week will still be welcome.

The team had a straight run at planting potatoes this year and finished last week, averaging around 30ac per day.

They now plan to remove the fleece on 25% of their earlier-sown Premier Queen crop, as the fleece is beginning to hold them back.

Padraig is removing the fleece on 25% of his early sown Premier Queen potatoes this week.

Padraig’s early Queens and Lady Rosette have all emerged and their initial pre-emerge herbicide appears to have worked well, despite the dry conditions when spraying.

The remainder of their Rooster crop, as well as the salad variety Jameson, will receive a pre-emerge spray of Shotput (0.5l/ha) and Spotlight Plus (0.33l/ha) this week. They are on track to have early crop on the market by the June bank holiday.

They plan to apply a follow-up weed spray of Wing P (1l/ha) on their onion crops, which have been brought up to 125kg N/ha.

Padraig started planting his carrot crops last week and was finished within two days. Ground preparation for carrots is broadly the same as potatoes.

He planted the crop at 1.7m seeds/ha and broadcast 1,100kg/ha of 5:7:17 after planting.

This year, they are growing Gangway and Prospect for roasting, malting and feed markets

Padraig and his team planted 75% of his root crops first, before moving onto spring cereal sowing. This year, they are growing Gangway and Prospect for roasting, malting and feed markets.

All crops were sown at 187kg/ha and were sown with 490kg/ha of 8:7:25+S. Padraig plans to bring his malting barley up to 137kg N/ha and his feed and roasting crops will be brought up to 150kg N/ha.

Padraig remarks that aphid pressure is high in his area

This week, he also intends to apply Calibre Max (96g/ha) and Galaxy (0.75l/ha) to his spring-sown crops. He also intends to apply an aphicide and trace elements to the crops.

Padraig remarks that aphid pressure is high in his area. His Isabel winter oats are currently at GS32 and were sprayed this week with CCC (1l/ha), Talius(0.2l/ha), Sonis (0.2l/ha), Jenton (1.5l/ha)as well as Mantrac.

Jonathan Kelly

Limavady, Derry

The dry weather is beginning to cause some issues on Jonathan’s drier fields. Around 20ac of his winter barley are really suffering from lack of moisture and are going backwards.

Maize planting is also being disrupted, as his sandier soil isn’t able to cover the plastic enough, causing it to be pulled by the planter. This week’s rain will be welcomed.

Jonathan planting this year's maize crop in very dry conditions.

He is aiming to finish maize planting by the end of the week. This year, Jonathan is planting the varieties P7892 and P7033 and is applying the herbicide Wing-P (4l/ha), Most Micro (2.5l/ha) and Predict (250ml/ha).

He finished sowing 130ac of spring barley last week and sowed a further 100ac for neighbours with his Lemken Solitair 9 3m mounted drill.

He sowed Planet and Diablo at 185kg/ha and broadcast 225kg/ha of 20:10:10 (UK measurement) before rolling the crop.

He also applied an application of chicken manure on that ground before ploughing. It will be two to three weeks before Jonathan applies a herbicide. Aphid pressure is generally low in his area.

Winter wheat

Jonathan is very happy with his winter wheat crops, as they are sown on heavier ground. He aims to apply a T1 on the crop this week of Bravo (1l/ha), Ascra Xpro (1l/ha), Medax Max (0.5kg/ha), as well as Jett (2l/ha) and Mag Phos (2l/ha). He noted the evidence of a small amount of septoria in the crop from earlier in the season. Jonathan will aim to bring the crop up to 175kg N/ha once moisture arrives.

He aims to bring his hybrid rye crops up to 125kg N/ha and 100kg K/ha this week

The rest of his winter barley crops are looking well, he remarks. Two weeks ago, the crop received a T1 of Fandango (1l/ha), Bravo (1l/ha) and Zypar (1l/ha), and was followed up one week later with Medax Max (0.5kg/ha) and Jett (2l/ha), as well as Mag Phos (2l/ha) and manganese. He is aiming to bring the crop up to 175kg N/ha this week.

Colm Farrell

Navan, Meath

Crops are waiting for rain on Colm’s farm. While most of his spring-sown crops have established, around 10% haven’t germinated due to the dry conditions. This week’s rain will be much welcomed.

Colm stayed tight to the plough when drilling his spring crops. However, where ploughed ground was allowed to dry out for four to five days before drilling, this led to patchy emergence.

Colm brought his spring barley crops up to 100kg N/ha this week.

This year, he is growing Gangway, Errigal and Planet spring barley. Crops were drilled around 175kg/ha, along with 185kg/ha of DAP (18% N and 20% P). Based on previous experience, Colm knows that harvesting spring barley can be tricky as the days get shorter. So this season, he also applied 200kg/ha of Muriate of Potash to minimise the risk of crop brackling, ensuring as smooth a harvest as possible. The crop is at the two-leaf stage and he will bring it to 100kg N/ha this week.

His Husky and Isabel oats were sown at between 155-170kg/ha, along with 200kg/ha of DAP. He applied 230kg of Potash/ha and brought the crop up to 80kg N/ha.

There is a notable improvement in this crop, compared to crops that were one-passed and Colm attributes this to better moisture retention

This year, he has min-tilled some of this crop into tillage land that hasn’t been ploughed in three years. Straw has also been incorporated into the ground for the past five years.

There is a notable improvement in this crop, compared to crops that were one-passed and Colm attributes this to better moisture retention.

Colm applied Opera (1l/ha) to his Graham winter wheat crops a few weeks ago, in response to a yellow rust outbreak.

He is aiming to apply a T1 of Elatus Era (1l/ha) and Bravo (1l/ha) to that crop this week.

These crops have been brought to 150kg N/ha, but he notes that the fertiliser granules are still visible on the surface

His Costello crops are further behind and last Friday he applied CCC (1l/ha), Tempo (0.2l/ha), Axial Pro (0.55l/ha) as well as Bravo (1l/ha).

These crops have been brought to 150kg N/ha, but he notes that the fertiliser granules are still visible on the surface.

His winter barley was sown in poorer conditions last autumn and has suffered this spring as a result. Both his Cassia and Bazooka varieties received their T1 last week of Elatus Era (1l/ha) and Bravo (1l/ha).
