The Northern Irish Charolais Club held its national finals at Clogher Valley Show on Wednesday of last week, attracting nearly 80 entries. Judge Allen Drysdale selected his champion as Summervilla Niki from the Matchett family based out of Portadown, Co Armagh.

This classy heifer is sired by Cavelands Fenian, while the dam is out of Fury Action. Originally bred by Tony and Ciaran O’Donnell, Elphin, she was purchased by Nigel and Gail Matchett at the Irish Charolais Society premier heifer sale last November for €7,000.

The overall Charolais championship win was only the start for Niki, as she also went on to take the junior heifer interbreed and supreme interbreed championships of the show.

This topped an exceptional day for the Birches herd, which also claimed the reserve senior female championship and best pair, along with three first placings.

Taking the reserve senior female championship was Limkiln Nicole. Another southern-bred heifer, Nigel and Gail also purchased Nicole at the elite heifer sale in November. Originally bred by Richard Hackett in Co Clare, she is a Panama heifer out of a Plexus dam.

Taking the junior male and reserve overall Charolais championships was David Bothwell with KIlladeas Orlando. This May 2018-born bull is a son of the 11,000gns herd stock bull Battleford Lazer and the homebred Killadeas Faithfull. This bull was also the junior male champion at this year’s Balmoral Show.

In the senior male championship, the senior bull Sportsman Monarch came out on top. This powerful bull was brought out by John McGrath, Dromore, Co Tyrone, having been purchased at Stirling in October 2017 for 12,000gns. Monarch is a son of the 70,000gns Barnsford Ferny, with the dam Sportsman Honeydew.

On to the junior female championship and it was Armagh-based Jeremy Paynter who emerged victorious with Drumilly Overjoyed. Sired by Invictus, she is out of the homebred dam Drumilly Favourite.

Taking the reserve junior championship was the young calf Altnaderog Orla from Gerard McShane, Strabane, Co Tyrone. This one is a daughter of Tonaghmore Augusto, while the dam is Altnaderog Orla.
