Farmer Billy Laird (left) owns a herd of 40 pedigree Red Polls and brought a cow and her calf along to the Royal Highland Show last week to highlight their success story at coming off of the rare breeds list. In addition, Billy’s competition to name the calf proved to be popular at the four-day event. Ruth Dalton (right), field officer for the Rare Breeds Survival Trust, said: “Native breeds are really coming into their own, which is a great message for UK agriculture.”
