EU farm ministers will exchange views this week on the CAP transitional rules, which aim to continue direct payments to farmers across the EU for 2021 as the EU budget continues to be thrashed out.

Last week, MEPs voiced concerns that the necessary work to get agreement on the next budget over the line could be completed within a year. A number voiced the opinion that the transition period should be two years.

Agenda

Also on the agenda this week is the European green deal, which aims for Europe to be the first climate-neutral continent by 2050 and has a number of key policy areas, including farming and biodiversity.

In its farming policy area ‘From farm to fork’, the green deal says that 40% of the CAP budget should contribute to climate action.

The European Commission will present the deal to ministers, with an exchange of views between ministers and the Commission on the agricultural aspects of it to follow.
