Mayo farmer and former Irish Farmer’s Association (IFA) vice-chair Brendan Golden has been elected to the position of national chair of the IFA livestock committee.

The IFA made the announcement via social media on Tuesday 7 January.

He will officially take up the position from Angus Woods at the association's annual general meeting, which is due to be held on Monday 27 January, when the election for national treasurer will take place.

The election was decided during a meeting in Portlaoise, where the association had beef price as a priority on its agenda, as Irish prices are currently below market indicators.

Further elections

The next chair of the IFA national environment committee will be Paul O’Brien. He is the Kilkenny representative on the committee and will succeed Thomas Cooney at the AGM.

Next week will see two other committee chair elections take place.

The national liquid milk committee will meet on Wednesday 15 January and the IFA national rural development committee will meet on Thursday 16 January.
