NZ lamb exports to UK collapse

Imports of New Zealand lamb to the UK fell by 47% and 37% during April and May respectively, the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB) has confirmed.

The lack of New Zealand imports, along with increased buying demand for the upcoming Eid Al Adha festival, have both contributed to unseasonably high lamb prices in July.

AHDB analysts are forecasting EU sheepmeat production will be down 1.5% year-on-year in 2020, with total imports down 5%. Total lamb consumption within the EU is expected to drop by 2.6%.
