I was delighted to be asked to Elphin Mart to open its new facilities last Saturday. The event coincided with the Irish Charolais Society’s Christmas cracker. The mart was a hive of activity with over 1,000 farmers in attendance. Those promoting the demise of the Irish suckler herd in favour of forestry should have attended. The level of economic activity generated by the beef sector and its importance to a rural town was clear. The committee members of Elphin Mart deserve great credit for the investment in the mart and ensuring they provide a suitable venue that is safe and with the necessary facilities to trade and show livestock.
