A new grant of up to €12,000 to replace or repair septic tanks came into effect on 1 January 2024.

However, only householders in certain parts of the country are eligible to apply.

Farmers and rural dwellers in areas which are deemed to be in high-status objective catchment areas are eligible to apply, resulting in thousands of rural householders being excluded from the scheme.

The Department of Housing has published a map which shows what parts of the country are eligible and ineligible.

Many householders in the midlands are ineligible for the scheme, as are those in Limerick, parts of Clare, east Galway, Roscommon and Kilkenny.

You can find out if your house is eligible for the grant by clicking here.

The link will bring you to an interactive map of Ireland, with three colours which state whether your home is eligible, ineligible or may be eligible for the grant:

  • Green: you are eligible to apply for the grant.
  • Yellow: this is a buffer area and you may be eligible to apply.
  • Red: you are not eligible to apply for the grant.
  • New rates

The new €12,000 grant rate is an increase from the €5,000 which was on offer until last year.

The qualifying condition that the septic tank must be registered with the local authority prior to 1 February 2013 has also been removed from the terms of the scheme.
