Pig farmers staged the latest in a series of protests at Clonmel SuperValu on Tuesday evening, as they reiterated their demands for a meeting with the Musgrave Group, SuperValu’s parent company.

“Pig prices have dropped with the price of feed increasing by €20/t to €40/t for some farmers this week,” Tom Sherman, chair of the IFA’s southern region pigs committee, said.

“We’ve written to the Musgrave Group requesting a meeting and their senior staff has refused to meet with the IFA president to discuss the matter of cheap imports undercutting Irish produce.”

The IFA has been leading protests from Waterford to Limerick over the last number of weeks, as fears mount that rising costs are driving pig farmers out of business.

“All we want is to be treated with respect and dignity,” Sherman said.

“But protests will continue sporadically right across the country until the Musgrave Group agrees to meet us.”
