Rainfall levels have more than doubled in some areas in the past week, figures from Met Eireann show.

More than 80mm of rain have fallen in the past seven days on Valentia, Co Kerry, which is more than twice the normal amount for this time of year.

Weather stations in Claremorris, Co Mayo, and Belmullet recorded 72.4mm and 67.4mm of rain between 12 January and 18 January. In the case of Claremorris, this was more than two and a half times the normal level for this time of year.

Cavan

Ballyhaise in Co Cavan recorded almost 58mm in the seven days – again, more than two and a half times the normal level.

Shannon airport and Cork airport both saw more than 50mm of rain, while rainfall at Knock airport was twice as high as normal.

There is no reprieve in sight, with Met Eireann forecasting rain at the weekend.

This will leave farmers under mounting pressure from filling slurry tanks. Slurry is being moved within and between farms, where some tanks have spare capacity.

Farmers have been warned again about the dangers of slurry gas when agitating, by a farmer recovering from a slurry incident in which he lost eight animals.
