Last Saturday’s sale at Balla Mart saw another large entry of over 1,100 bullocks, heifers, cull cows and in calf cows pass through the three rings. The bullock ring saw another good trade for good quality types.

Heavy bullocks over 600kg sold from €2.05/kg to €2.25/kg for good quality types. Bullocks from 500kg to 600kg sold mainly from €2.20/kg to €2.40/kg, while top quality U grades sold from €2.50/kg to €2.60/kg.

Light bullocks from 400kg to 500kg sold mainly from €2.30/kg to €2.40/kg for average quality types, while the top third made from €2.50/kg to over €2.75/kg.

Heifers

Heifers over 600kg sold from €2.10/kg to €2.30/kg for average quality types, while top quality types in the same weight range sold to over €2.40/kg. Heifers from 500kg to 600kg sold mainly from €2.20/kg to €2.30/kg with top quality lots on the day selling to over €2.50/kg, with the very top price at €2.74/kg.

Lighter heifers from 400kg to 500kg saw stronger prices of €2.20/kg to €2.40/kg for average quality types while the top third made from €2.60/kg to over €3.00/kg for a top quality 485kg Blue. Angus from the dairy herd and Friesians made from €1.80/kg to €2.20/kg.

Good quality fleshed continental cull cows sold mainly from €1.85/kg to €1.95/kg with top quality lots making over €2.00/kg. Friesian cull cows sold from €0.85/kg to €1.52/kg with age and quality having a big impact on price.
