High-end supermarket Waitrose is to stop selling imported lamb as it moves to an all-British offering in summer 2021. The move has been welcomed by the National Sheep Association.

This will apply to both fresh and frozen and will be the case 365 days a year. The retailer already offers British lamb on its fresh meat counters and British organic lamb throughout the year.

NSA chief executive Phil Stocker comments: “Our New Zealand counterparts will see this as an unfavourable move but there is no denying that the sustainability agenda is driving a change in attitude, with many nations seeking to protect their own interests and to localise trade where it makes sense.”
