The Irish Cattle Breeding Federation (ICBF) is updating the genetic evaluations in the dairy EBI this week. Changes to the way genomics is used in the EBI were announced in August and these changes are coming into effect this week.

For most farmers, the change in herd EBI will be small, increasing by up to €5, but a small number of farmers who have a high proportion of their herd genotyped are likely to see reductions in their overall herd EBI.

The changes to the EBI are as a result of a cap being put on the genomic evaluation at a trait level, something ICBF CEO Seán Coughlan says is in line with global best practice.
