Ennistymon Men’s Shed in Co Clare was founded in December 2014, when local men and women joined efforts to create a more sociable community.

Leading by example, the local women’s textile group met on a regular basis to work on projects and have a chat. Acting as a similar resource for the men of Ennistymon, the men’s shed is now in its fourth year.

The North West Clare Family Resource Centre (NWCFRC) was instrumental in the initial set-up of Ennistymon Men’s Shed when it opened its doors four years ago. Seeing the positive effects the initiative had on communities worldwide, the organisation was determined to support the idea and process of establishing the shed. This good will is typical of the Banner County it seems, as Frank McNamara of Ennis Men’s Shed was also an integral supporter while getting Ennistymon Men’s Shed up and running. The shed, which is based in the NWCFRC, is a cornerstone of the local community, providing projects, tea and friendship for all men.

Members who range from 20 years and up are mostly career-focused, with varying interests and positions in other projects and associations. The shed offers them time-out from the worries of work life. Meetings are weekly, on a Wednesday evening, in a laid back and informal environment. As well as the laughter, tea and camaraderie, members actively partake in courses offered by the local ETB.

Among the favourites are wood turning and carving workshops, as well as stain glass and other courses. Putting their newly acquired skills to good use, the men build and sell garden furniture, bat boxes, wooden tool boxes and finely hand-crafted wooden pens. Furthermore, the group is delighted to get their hands dirty in the community garden, where they plant and harvest vegetables and more. A recent autumn barbecue hosted by the members of the shed was enjoyed by many, including the members of the women’s textile group.

It is this community spirit that makes the group warm and welcoming for all men over 18 years.

Join Ennistymon Men’s Shed for a cup of tea on Wednesday evenings, 7-9pm. Cost is only €2/night and the shed is located beside the NWCFRC..
