Voting to elect the 16 president of the IFA gets under way in IFA branches across the country next Monday 25 November.

IFA returning officer Richard Kennedy has encouraged farmers to vote for the positions of IFA president and deputy president.

Over the next three weeks, the IFA’s 944 branches will hold votes, with the full list of dates available in the Irish Farmers Journal.

The race for president is being fought by John Coughlan from the Buttevant branch in north Cork, Tim Cullinan from the Toomevara branch in north Tipperary and Angus Woods from the Barndarrig branch in Wicklow.

Thomas Cooney from the Laragh branch in Cavan and Brian Rushe from the Carbury/Cadamstown branch in Kildare are vying for the position of deputy.

Choice

Kennedy said: “Our presidential election gives every member the same say in choosing the next president of IFA.

"It’s an important exercise in democracy and it affords farmers across all enterprises, and in every part of the country, an equal voice in deciding who is best placed to represent Irish farmers from 2020 on.”

Voting will conclude on Friday 13 December and the count will take place in the Castleknock Hotel, Co Dublin, on Tuesday 17 December. The next president will take office at the IFA AGM in January 2020.
